Both facilitated diffusion and active transport need a concentration gradient to occur. Both of them are capable of transporting ions, sugars, and salts. They are also similar in the way that they use membrane proteins as transport vehicles.
Is a concentration gradient needed for active transport?Active transport requires energy for the process by transporting molecules against a concentration or electrochemical gradient.
Does facilitated diffusion go with the concentration gradient?In facilitated diffusion, molecules diffuse across the plasma membrane with assistance from membrane proteins, such as channels and carriers. A concentration gradient exists for these molecules, so they have the potential to diffuse into (or out of) the cell by moving down it.
Does facilitated diffusion requires energy and can transport molecules against a concentration gradient?Simple diffusion does not require energy: facilitated diffusion requires a source of ATP. B. Simple diffusion can only move material in the direction of a concentration gradient; facilitated diffusion moves materials with and against a concentration gradient.
