What are the possible blood groups of a child whose parents have blood groups AB and O

The correct option is CEither A or BIf the father’s blood group is O, he has the genotype IOIO or (ii). The mother has blood type AB, which means that her genotype would be IAIB. The possible combinations of these two groups would result in children having genotypes IAIO orIBIO, which would give them blood groups A or B respectively. Thus, blood group O cannot appear among children if one of the parents has the group AB.

Q: If the parents' blood groups are O+ and B+, can one of their offspring be of any other blood group other than these two? Since one of my siblings is A+ and there has been a doubt about her parentage and in her inheritance. Please help.

A:

Our red blood cells (and some tissues) have got chemical substances called antigens on their surface and the ability to form these antigens is governed by genes inherited from parents. The pattern of genes we have is called genotype and the form in which it is expressed is called phenotype. It is the genotype (genetic make-up) which decides what the blood group (phenotype) will be.

In the ABO system there are three alleles (one member of a pair or series of genes that occupy a specific position on a specific chromosome): Ia - producing the antigen A, Ib - producing the antigen B and Io - producing neither antigen. IA and IB are co-dominant i.e. if both alleles are present, both antigens (A and B) will be formed on the surfaces of red blood cells and the individual will have blood group AB. Io is recessive and produces neither antigen and thus an individual will have blood group O if two of these alleles are present. The genotypic make-up can have 6 possibilities resulting in the following phenotypes:

Ia Ib - AB, Ia Ia - A, Ia Io - A, Ib Ib - B, Ib Io - B, and Io Io – O

Blood group of parents Blood group of child
A and A A, O
A and B A, B, AB, O
A and AB A, B, AB
A and O A, O
B and B B, O
B and AB A, B, AB
B and O B, O
AB and AB A, B, AB
AB and O A, B
O and O O

However, my advice to you would be to get the blood groups of the parents and the children re-tested at a reliable, quality-assured lab before speculating or jumping to any conclusion.

Blood type can be used to disprove paternity only in some cases.

In other words, the non-father's blood type may be the same or be of a type where either man could be the father based solely on the blood type but not in the results of a DNA Paternity test.

The ABO blood type charts below can be used to predict the possibilities of paternity.

The charts below can assist you to determine either:

    1. The ABO blood type of the child when the blood type of the father and the mother are known (top chart), or

    2. The ABO blood type of the father if the blood type of the child and the mother are known (bottom chart).

ABO blood types can be complicated to understand. This is mostly due to the fact that the 'O-type' antigen is masked by the presence of an A- or B-type antigen. This is explained in the following chart, showing the different the genotypes that make up the blood types.

Genotype (DNA)Blood Type
AO or AA A blood type
AB AB blood type
BO or BB B blood type
OO O blood type

For example, two O blood type parents can produce a child with only O blood type. Two parents with A blood type can produce a child with either A or O blood types. Two parents with B blood type can produce a child with either B or O blood type. One parent with A and another with B can produce a child with A, B, AB or O blood types. If one parent has A and another has AB, they can either produce a child with A, B or AB blood types. If one parent has A and another has O, they can either produce a child with A or O blood types.

Rh Positive (Rh+) and Negative (Rh-) Blood Types

The Rh (+/-) factor is inherited separately from the ABO blood types. Similarly to the masking effect of the O gene in ABO blood types, the Rh negative (Rh-) gene is also masked by the presence of a Rh positive (Rh+) genotype. Therefore, a person may have a Rh + blood type and can still have an Rh - gene (See the chart below). Further more, 2 parents with Rh + blood types can have a child with Rh - blood type.

Genotype (DNA)Blood Type
(+ , -) or (+ , +) Rh +
(- , -) Rh -

The U.N. Convention on the Rights of The Child specifically supports a child's human right to have a relationship with both his/her biological parents. In addition, this article is proof that The Hospital for Sick Children ("Sick Kids") supports paternity fraud.

Further "Sick Kids" supports a mother's rights only, which they view, supersedes 3 other people's rights, namely, the rights of the biological father, the rights of the mother's male partner/husband and the child's identity rights. Read More ..

I read a USA Today article on child support by Martin Kasindorf entitled, Men wage battle on 'paternity fraud'. Paternity fraud is when a woman names the wrong man as a father for the purpose of forcing him to pay child support. The words 'paternity fraud' were in quotes as if they referred to someone's questionable characterization rather than a straightforward fact. This might have moved me to let out a long sigh except that I knew it would not have been worth the trouble. I know from experience that 'paternity fraud' would not have been in quotes unless we were being prepared for some unadulterated bullshit. Read More ..
