Articles from Community Eye Health are provided here courtesy of International Centre for Eye Health How do you measure visual acuity in Snellen chart?A person taking the test covers one eye from 6 metres or 20 feet away, and reads aloud the letters of each row, beginning at the top. The smallest row that can be read accurately indicates the visual acuity in that specific eye.
What line should you be able to read on an eye chart? These are considered to be normal vision with the 20/20 line being the traditional normal vision line. It is generally felt that the maximum visual acuity of the eye is around 20/15 or 20/16. This means that if you are able to read the bottom line, you are probably a good guesser.
When performing a distant acuity examination the medical assistant should have the patient stand how far from the vision chart? The top number refers to the distance you stand from the chart. This is often 20 feet (6 meters).
What is the proper procedure for testing visual acuity? You will be asked to cover one eye with the palm of your hand, a piece of paper, or a small paddle while you read out loud the smallest line of letters you can see on the chart. Numbers, lines, or pictures are used for people who cannot read, especially children. If you are not sure of the letter, you may guess.
