Fighting supernatural threats requires a certain degree of bravado, with these spectral entities proving a terrifying presence for the inhabitants of the Ghostbusters universe. Fortunately, Sony Pictures’ iconic film series features plenty of fearless characters, who are willing to face the world’s most devious ghosts.

These bold heroes have committed some of the noblest acts, across their respective Ghostbusters franchises. While some of these ghost-hunting individuals appear unfazed by the paranormal activity, however, others seem somewhat less certain, showing a greater reluctance to face these deeply unpleasant spectors, which terrorize the world.

12 Ray Stantz

As one of the Ghostbusters’ founding members, Ray Stantz’s enthusiasm for the supernatural is infectious throughout the comedy franchise. His ghostbusting career sees him encounter all manners of spooks while maintaining his strong passion for all things paranormal.

On the surface, Ray appears especially courageous, as he takes on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man and helps to defeat Vigo the Carpathian. The excitable ghost exterminator is not as audacious as he seems, however, with his encounter with Casper the friendly ghost leaving him terrified by the spectral being. Ray refuses to capture Casper and flees the scene, displaying a more cowardly aspect to his personality.

11 Peter Venkman

Portrayed by Bill Murray, Peter Venkman is highly regarded by fans as the best Ghostbusters character, with his witty commentary while investigating hauntings providing much enjoyment for viewers. However, Peter’s comedy schtick is, in reality, a mask for his true feelings, as he appears somewhat less confident than a few of his colleagues.

While Peter does stand up to the bullish Walter Peck and help take down Gozer with his colleagues, he also acts terrified upon encountering Slimer for the first time. The snarky scientist showing a rare sign of weakness results in him being “slimed” by the mischievous ghost (emphasizing a more defenseless side to Venkman’s character).

10 Patty Tolan

With her welcoming and chatty personality, Patty Tolan is a unique character within Ghostbusters: Answer The Call. The subway worker is thrown into the world of the Ghostbusters through her initial paranormal encounter at her workplace and proves herself to be a brave presence throughout the feature.

Patty shows a great deal of courage in her ghostly dealings, as she assists in capturing Mayhem and slaps Rowan’s spirit out of the possessed Abby Yates. However, she also displays a frightened attitude during her experience with a haunted mannequin, revealing a more vulnerable side to the talkative history buff.

9 Erin Gilbert

As co-author of the “Ghosts From Our Past” book, Erin Gilbert holds a keen interest in the supernatural. The determined scientist has a long and storied history of spooky happenings, having first met a ghost as a little girl, and is therefore well-prepared for her ghostbusting duties.

Erin appears excited upon discovering the ghost of Gertrude Aldridge, as her hysterical reaction is recorded by Abby for the world to see. The scientist also bravely jumps through a dimensional portal to save her friend Abby from an uncertain fate, displaying a daring approach to her ghosthunting role. Despite these signs of bravery, however, Erin is easily spooked by Jillian’s sudden appearance, suggesting she is perhaps not as confident as she seems.

8 Lucky Domingo

Acting as the love interest for Trevor, Lucky is a sweet and endearing presence throughout Ghostbusters Afterlife. The friendly waitress seems unfazed by the ghostly goings-on, as she joins Trevor and Phoebe in fighting the paranormal threat facing Summerville.

While Lucky takes a less proactive role in the ghostbusting duties, she appears somewhat confident under these unusual circumstances nonetheless. The waitress not only breaks her friends into her father’s prison so they can recover their ghost hunting equipment, but she also assists in rescuing Callie, who has been possessed by Zuul, reflecting a strong and defiant personality.

7 Trevor Spengler

Arriving with his family in the small American town of Summerville, Trevor’s determined attempts to win Lucky’s affections make him one of the most likable characters in Ghostbusters: Afterlife. His bravery in the world of romance is also represented in his supernatural encounters, as he joins Phoebe and Podcast in their battle against spooks.

Trevor willingly drives the Ecto-1 in pursuit of Muncher, speeding through the streets of Summerville with little hesitation. In addition, he also proves instrumental in Gozer’s defeat, s he uses his Proton Pack to charge the ghost traps, allowing the paranormal God and her Terror Dogs to be banished back to the afterlife.

6 Abby Yates

Through her decision to publish “Ghosts From Our Past” through Amazon, Abby Yates is instrumental in bringing the Answer The Call Ghostbusters together. The driven and eager scientist is also one of the team’s most courageous individuals, as she takes on some particularly dangerous tasks.

Alongside her spectral experiences, Abby agrees to test Jillian’s equipment, which, with their nuclear output, carry some especially perilous potential. The keen Ghostbuster also willingly battles the ghost-infested streets of New York, bravely punching the spectral beings with her proton gloves, before confronting Rowan in his gigantic form (representing a bold approach to her paranormal occupation).

5 Winston Zeddemore

As the only Ghostbuster in the original team without scientific credentials, Winston Zeddemore forms more of an “everyman” role in the 1984 classic. Despite his less knowledgeable outlook, however, Winston seems noticeably relaxed about his Ghostbusting duties, in light of receiving “a steady paycheck.”

His full-time position hunting ghosts sees Winston encounter all manners of spooky occurrences, which he takes in his stride. The Ghostbusters’ laidback employee takes on everything, from supernatural Gods to living paintings, with a somewhat positive outlook, demonstrating a confident attitude in the face of extreme danger.

4 Podcast

Wonderfully quirky and infectious cheerful, Podcast’s strong passion for unexplained mysteries makes him a highly engaging character throughout Afterlife. The young podcaster’s bravery also knows no bounds, as he explores the Shandor mine with his friend Phoebe.

Podcast’s gutsy attitude leads to the boy investigating the abandoned slaughterhouse with Egon Spengler’s grandson upon hearing the sounds of Muncher. The brave young lad also joins Phoebe and Trevor in hunting down Muncher when the ghost escapes, and later takes down an entire army of mini Stay Puft Marshmallow Men on his own, which makes him one of the franchise’s most fearless individuals.

3 Jillian Holtzmann

With her eccentric and aloof personality, Jillian Holtzmann is one of the most underrated aspects of the 2016 Ghostbusters. Her striking intelligence also lends itself well to her bravery during hauntings, with her vast knowledge leaving her especially well prepared for ghostly encounters.

Jillian appears completely unfazed throughout most of the movie, as she casually snacks on some Pringles during Gertrude’s spectral appearance. The scientist extrovert also uses some extremely hazardous nuclear materials to construct the Ghostbusters’ proton weapons and shows little concern when faced with New York’s paranormal invasion, proving to be a strong and composed presence during the Ghostbusters’ encounter with Rowan.

2 Phoebe Spengler

As the grandchild of Egon Spengler, Phoebe is shown to be Afterlife’s smartest character throughout the film’s runtime. The youngster’s clever approach to Ghostbusting results in the schoolgirl displaying a great deal of confidence, as she faces numerous spooks and specters across the film’s runtime.

Phoebe appears undisturbed by the presence of her late grandfather, who assists her from beyond the grave. The young child not only wields the proton pack during the movie’s climax, but she also willingly ejects herself from the Ecto-1 in the gunner seat as she takes on Muncher, and helps stop Gozer and her Terror Dogs, showing an especially daring streak.

1 Egon Spengler

Appearing as a social outcast, Egon Spengler finds friendship with his fellow Ghostbusters, as he supplies his workmates with their remarkable equipment. Egon’s clear intelligence is not his only attribute to the team, however, as he also displays a defiant attitude in the face of ghosts, gods, and Marshmallow Men.

These brave acts see Egon boldly navigate some incredibly risky territory, as he crosses proton streams despite warning that it could cause “total protonic reversal.” The knowledgable scientist appears particularly defiant in Afterlife’s opening scene, as he stands unafraid in the farmhouse’s doorway upon being stalked by Zuul, ready to meet his demise. Even in death, Egon shows a courageous streak, however, as he defies his own passing to help the Ghostbusters and his grandchildren defeat Gozer once more.
