Show Loading Play Primary RoleWhether calling himself Ares (as in Greek myth) or Mars (Roman), this godlike being is one of Wonder Woman’s most dedicated antagonists. Way to be a granddad, Ares -- as father to Diana’s mother, Hippolyta, the God of War spends a lot of time making his granddaughter’s life a living hell. As his story has changed over the years, his familial connection to Wonder Woman has also been altered, but more on that in a moment.First appearance:
Ares, the God of War Powers and AbilitiesAs the son of Zeus and Hera, an extra-dimensional being straight out of classical mythology and thought by ancient man to be a deity alongside his fellow Olympians, Ares is a cosmic creature with a predictably extraordinary range of powers. Virtually immortal (except when he dies), and more or less invulnerable (except when he can be hurt or killed), Ares can travel to different dimensions, fly, change form, exert control over the living and occasionally the dead, and also possesses the usual assortment of super-enhanced traits like speed and strength. Oriented as he is to the very concept of war, he feeds on negative emotions like anger and hatred, can redirect those energies for his use and apply exceptional strategic thinking, and has control over weaponry and those that would utilize that weaponry to cause mayhem and destruction. In at least one form, his very presence can cause conflict to erupt around him. Basically, try not to get the guy mad.Loading Play Origin and BackgroundWith DC’s penchant for regularly reshaping its universe with a variety of reality-shattering special crossover events, Ares has been through some changes reaching all the way back to his origins at the very dawn of the Golden Age of superhero comics. After a single issue appearance as Ares, he was known for years as Mars throughout the pre-Crisis era, and operated from a base on a neighboring planet in this solar system (three guesses which one) and assisted the Axis powers during World War II. Before the DC Universe transformed forever, he had allied himself with fellow fiends the Anti-Monitor and Hades.Ares made his first appearance in 1942's Wonder Woman #1. In the more recent New 52 continuity, a bald-headed old man named War manifested as the latest version of this venerable character. Now Wonder Woman’s brother and former mentor, Ares is no longer an enemy and has therefore generated a bit of controversy in the midst of this reimagining. From the 1940s to the present, Ares continues to play a sometimes unexpected but certainly dramatic role in the unfolding saga of the DC Universe. Loading Play How He Could Appear in the Wonder Woman MovieSo far the only information we have on Ares’ involvement in the new film is that he might be waging war against humanity itself. There is also the possibility that Ares might appear in some human guise (perhaps in the person of Danny Huston’s character) before revealing a more monumental and imposing presence, maybe more like his usual elaborately armored comics incarnations. Can you say “Final Boss Fight?” We’re picturing the Amazon Princess pit against a metallic gargantuan in a sequence similar to the infamous excised final battle between Aragorn and Sauron in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Of course, that’s all just speculation on our part… but we can dream. There’s also a chance that Ares won’t be alone, but will be accompanied by another classic Wonder Woman enemy, the sorceress Circe (who went on to become Ares’ consort in the comics). Prior rumors placed Circe in the film too, though that remains unconfirmed and no casting information has been released at this time for either character. But as we all know, the couple that battles Diana Prince together stays together…or something. Danny Huston in Wonder Woman Find Arnold T. Blumberg on Twitter at @DoctoroftheDead.
