The Pilgrims sailed to North America on a ship called the Mayflower. The Mayflower was small - only 110 feet long. It was designed to carry goods, not people. They left England on Sept. 16, 1620. There were 102 colonists and about 30 sailors on board. The journey was crowded, and there was no place to shower or wash clothes. The Pilgrims spent most of their time crowded together in one room. It was dark, wet, and smelly. Lighting fires for cooking was dangerous, so the Pilgrims ate things like dried meat, cheese, and a cracker called hardtack. There were big waves that rocked the boat back and forth, making many people seasick. There were also dangerous storms. During one storm, a Pilgrim was swept overboard. He had to be rescued by the sailors. Another time, a storm damaged the ship. Luckily, the colonists were able to fix it and keep sailing. It took more than two months for the Pilgrims to reach North America. The Pilgrims arrived in North America on November 21, 1620. For the next six weeks, they lived on the Mayflower while they searched for the best place to build the colony.

Governors of Plymouth Plantation were elected, or chosen in a vote, to be the governor for one year at a time.

in 1621-1623 William Bradford was Governor.
He was also the Governor in 1635, 1637, 1639-1643, and in 1645-1656.

Thomas Prince was governor in 1634, 1638, 1657-1672
Josiah Winslow was governor from 1673-1679
