Part of communicating more effectively with a diverse audience is beginning to understand our own biases and how our experiences and values shape the lens through which we view our world. We cannot assume that others share our view of the world. This misassumption creates a disconnect between us and our audience, and it can sometimes be seen as ethnocentric. We need to study our audiences and inspect our words and gestures carefully to ensure nothing in our presentation suggests that we assume our way is superior to how another culture might operate. Below are some tips to follow when communicating with diverse audiences:

You might think, “why is this important?” It is important because the audience will listen to your speech through their value system.
How does cultural diversity affect public speech?Your audience may “look” and “sound” like you, but have a completely different world view. However, diversity can be a challenge because the more diverse an audience, the harder audience analysis and accommodating one's speech to the audience become.
Why is it important to understand the importance of audience diversity as an audience centered speaker?Audience analysis involves identifying the audience and adapting a speech to their interests, level of understanding, attitudes, and beliefs. Taking an audience-centered approach is important because a speaker's effectiveness will be improved if the presentation is created and delivered in an appropriate manner.
Why is audience diversity important in public speaking?Talking about those differences can reveal what you have in common and build your sense of community. Your challenge is to recognize how your listeners differ from one another and to understand, respect, and adapt to this diversity as you develop and deliver your speeches.
