Burden of disease is measured in a unit called DALY(disability adjusted life expectancy). 2. Life Expectancy - quantity An indication of how long a person can expect to live, it is the number of years of life remaining to a person at a particular age if the death rates do not change. 3. Health Adjusted Life Expectancy(HALE's) - quality A measure of burden of disease based on life expectancy at birth, but including an adjustment for time spent in poor health. It is the number of years in full health that a person can expect to live, based on current rates of ill health and mortality. 4. Disability Adjusted Life Years(DALYs) A measure of burden of disease, one DALY equals one year of healthy life loss due to premature death and time lived with illness, disease or injury. 5. Years of Life Lost(YLL) A measure of how many years of expected life are lost due to premature death. (life expectancy - death) 6. Years of Life Lost due to Disability(YLD) A measure of how many healthy years of life are lost due to illness, injury or disability. 7. Under 5 mortality The rate of deaths occurring in children under 5 years of age per 1000 live births. 8. Mortality Refers to death, often at a population level. 9. Morbidity Refers to ill-health in an individual and the levels of ill-health in a population or group. 10. Incidence The number of new cases of a conditioning during a given period of time. 11. Prevelance The number of proportion of cases in a particular disease or condition present in a population at a given time.(AIHW 2008). Mortality Rate(not KK) Number of deaths(usually expressed per 1000 000 people in a 12 month period) from a specific cause or all causes. Infant Mortality Rate Deaths occurring between birth and the first birthday, often expressed per 1000 live births. Maternal Mortality Rate Rate of deaths of women who are either pregnant or in the first 42 days after giving birth or having a termination. Expressed per 100 000 live births.
